The Westphalian horse breed originates from the Westphalia, Germany. This area is known to have the last semi wild horses of Germany. Annually there is an auction to auction off the young stallions. Westphalia and Lower Saxony are the top breeding regions within Germany, with Westphalia having approximately 10,000 broodmares and 120 state stallions.
The Westphalian horse was influenced by many bloodlines including Oldenburg, Hanoverian, Friesen, and Trotter blood are all involved. Today’s Westphalian shows the bloodlines of the present day Hanoverian, Trakehner and Thoroughbred horse breeds.
The Westphalian horse breed stands 15.3 – 16.2hh and is of all solid colors. They have an intelligent head, well shaped neck. deep broad body and powerful hindquarters.
The Westphalian horse breed has had championship horses in the equestrian disciplines of dressage and show jumping.
